Let the cost of a pair of socks be s and that of a shirt be k;
s+k=40------------(i)
The cost of a shirt k= 4s+5-------(i)
Replacing value of k in the first equation;
s+4s+5=40
5s+5=40
5s=35
s=[tex] \frac{35}{5} [/tex]
s=7
s+k=40
7+k=40
k=40-7
k=33
