Explain briefly how figured bass reflects chord inversion

Figured bass, typically used in the continuo parts of baroque music, is 'figures' being written above the bass line instead of chords. This relate to chord inversion, in that if you wanted the first inversion of a chord the composer would simply put a "6" indicating that the bass note is actually the third of the chord.
